Cold Open And Cosmetic Experiments
SPEAKER_02Okay, so welcome to our podcast. This is a little bit different today because this podcast is a spin-off of our radio show.
SPEAKER_01You're not gonna gas me up? No, I am. Oh, you're I have so much to say about gassing you up. I don't even know. That's good.
SPEAKER_02I like that Gen Z talk. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Okay, but first, I want to set this up of why I'm wearing a hat and my face is beat red. I tagged you in the video. I know. Okay. So I only do podcasts on a certain day. I like to do them on a certain day, and I have a whole OCD routine. But you were coming to town, and I really wanted you on, and they said this was the only day that you could come on the podcast. I had already booked this. Okay. Okay.
SPEAKER_01So I did micro needling. Have you heard of it? Well, I have so like I want to do everything that you do. I think something that I am like so inspired by you is I think you're down to just try anything. Yeah. And you're always like trying the newest, coolest things. So whatever that video that you just tagged me in looked insane. Were you? Did you just have laughing gas? Oh, yeah. Oh, that's the best part.
SPEAKER_02It's like I've never done drugs or anything. I so I they have this special laughing gas that pain takes away the pain, but also wears off so you can drive. Oh, after five minutes of doing it. So every time I go to this place, this place right here. Yeah. Every time I go there, uh they let me take it and I love it.
SPEAKER_01And so what were they just putting into your head?
SPEAKER_02Okay, so here's what happened. This is so this is why I'm like this. Normally I'm a little bit more professional. Um and by that I mean a different color t-shirt. So Carly, who owns this place, natural hair loss, and they're all over the country. She took a whole bunch of hairs out of the back of my head months ago. And they take those hairs, they turn them into these stem cells and something called secretomes. So she had them all developed, created. Then they do, they take like this laser or these micro needles, these cut, they cut all these cuts in your head and my face and my head, and then they rub them in. And it's supposed to eventually make me beautiful. Oh, like you.
SPEAKER_01Like working. It's working. Like you are beautiful. Okay, that's nice. I I well, what I was thinking about was we should have done. Also, are we is this like are we is the podcast? Oh, okay. I love that we're just we just jumped right in.
SPEAKER_02Well, you've listened to the radio show. We do.
SPEAKER_01That's honestly, I I like that. I just want to double check before I admit that I've never had anything like that done before. No, like and look at, but look at my do you say a boat? Like, I gotta go. I feel like I feel like I'm like, well, what how old are you now? Um I'm about to turn 30 in December. 30? What? Maybe you're 13? Yeah, isn't that insane? What? Isn't that insane? What? Yes. And now I'm now I'm ready. That's why I so I feel like I'm ready to go try something like that. Because I'm I like I think it's good to have like, you know, the show your natural emotions. But now sometimes I raise my eyebrows, I'm like, whoa. Now you're paying attention to it? I think it's time to join you in your next one.
SPEAKER_02Well, you know, it's funny because a lot of the shtick you do on your social media, like, you know, like eat hot dogs all day, whatever. Like eventually, now that you're gonna get into your 30s, I know. Are you gonna so you're Gen Z? Are you gonna be are you Gen Z right now? I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I'll take that. That's like the best company. Are you the young and a millennial? I think, I think technically, like I feel like I'm that cusp. I think if we looked it up, I would technically be like that in between. Millennial? But I'm I can bounce. Like, I'm I feel like I'm like a chameleon. Like, if I can be Gen Z, but then I also like could hang with my sisters and be like, oh no, I'm totally millennial. Like, I feel like I go either. Well, so would you ever start to do that?
SPEAKER_02Like, today, get Botox at the same place Kim Kardashian goes?
SPEAKER_01Like, maybe I I'm so scared. I get like scared of of that stuff, but but you don't get scared. Like, I feel like you try anything. I'm totally a millennial. Oh, really?
SPEAKER_02Okay, it's my wife talking off camera and off microphone.
SPEAKER_01Well, I wish that she was in here having a real. She's going to. She's going to. Okay, okay, good.
SPEAKER_02Because I want to do the real part with you. Okay. I want to have fun with you, but I want to do a real part. Then I want her to come in because I know she's enamored by you and with you in your whole career. Um, but anyway, so do I do now, Blake? And I also want your opinion on this too. So they did the thing on my head, and she, I said, I gotta go do a podcast, and I can't put anything in my hair. So I thought, do I do the interview with my hat on, or should like if I take my hat off, does it look bad?
unknownPut the hat on back on.
SPEAKER_01Put the hat back on. That was the best thing ever. So but you don't look overly red. Like, so it what did they do to you? It was it's just like uh they did a whole, like they they okay and then they put the things on my face and the same amount of. Have you ever done something that you were like, oh, this was a mistake. I should not have done this.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, a long time ago I did this thing called all therapy. Oh, and it was the most painful thing. It was for an advertiser, like no, I do all these things like what I did today on my own, right? It was an advertiser, and they wanted me to get laser hair removal on my body.
unknownUh-huh.
SPEAKER_02And I was like, I'm not hairy. So they did my back and it hurt, and then it made the hair grow back. All of a sudden I was getting hairy back.
unknownUh-huh.
SPEAKER_02And then they did this thing called old therapy, which they they they did something here, and it was the most painful thing I've ever done. So much so, Matt, I was crying and laughing, thinking, this has to be a joke. This can't be real. So at that point, I stopped doing stuff for advertisers. I do stuff that I from people I trust, like Carly. Her Carly has this company, Natural Hair Lost, and I trust her, and I do anything she says. If she says, I got a new machine, come in. And then there's a girl named Jamie Comstock. You know Jamie Comstock? Oh, yeah, yeah. We used to spin together. Oh, yeah, yeah. Jamie, she says, I got stuff, come in. Like she does, she does uh the not Botox, but she should do you. You should you want me to bring her in? Yeah, down.
SPEAKER_01Maybe that I think that's what we should do next. It's like me trying all of the things, and I walk out with like swollen face.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we can't move. That'd be
The Day That Started It
SPEAKER_02so so let's talk about you now, your career. So uh you're just massive now.
SPEAKER_01Well, I am so excited to be here with you because you, I truly, truly, truly credit you everything. In all, like you know, in life, like when you look back, like my mom always used to send me the Steve Jobs quote, and it was like, you cannot connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards. So you one day have to trust that the dots will connect. And like you, in my lifespan, if I were to like turn around and look at my like dots of life, you are like such an important dot in my life. If we never would have gone to your radio station and stood in that parking lot and I missed school in sixth grade, like I never would have met Miley. If I never met Miley, I never would have made that video. If I never made that video, I wouldn't have gone to college if I didn't go to college. It's like all of these things are these domino effects that like I truly credit back to that day, March 3rd, 2009. Like I have it's my password. Like it's like that day is like so important to me. And it all was with you, which is so crazy.
SPEAKER_02Thank you. You know what I love about the videos? Whenever you post a video of that day when you're in the parking lot, my mom is right next to you. Yes, and she passed away. So I get I get it pretty emotional every time you see it because she was really healthy. It was right before she got sick. Yeah, and uh, she was right there with you. You're holding the sign and she's standing next to you. Because I think then we handed you a phone, and Miley wanted to talk to you and brought you up, right?
SPEAKER_01That's how it started. It's like it's just so special. And yeah, I loved your relationship with your mom was like the most special thing ever to relationship with your mom.
SPEAKER_02The relationship with you had with your parents, I love like when you took your dad to the US Open, freaking just fantastic.
SPEAKER_01The only person that was more excited about my arena interview, though, was your wife. Yeah, yeah. Like I did it because I thought my dad would think it was cool. And then when I got a text from Blake, I'm like, oh now I'm officially cool.
SPEAKER_02Well, let's talk about the growth of this. So, so thanks for the credit. But when did you because do you call yourself an influencer, a TikToker?
SPEAKER_01What like all the above? I feel like any of those words are like so cool. I know sometimes people are like, oh, I don't want to be an influencer. And I'm like, now I feel like it's such a cool word, especially in what I'm doing now in my content. Like, I love feeling influential on a business. And I know that you can feel that way too. I feel like you growing up, if you would be like, Oh, I love this restaurant, like my family and I would go to it because you said that you loved it. Like, I feel like you are like the OG influencer, really, because we would listen to you every single morning and like you would say, Oh, I love this protein shake, and then like all of a sudden, my mom and I would go get the protein shake because you said that you liked it. So I feel like the word influencer is like really cool. If you have, you can actually influence and like impact a business, it's like the coolest thing ever. So then what started it for you? What was the first thing that it was like you posted something and it got legs? Well, I like my entire life, I was always making videos, like even when I was growing up in that parking lot, like I was making YouTube videos that just no one was watching. Right. And I were they were just about Miley. Like I used to make Miley Cyrus YouTube videos, and like my first 20 were just talking about that day at your radio station. Like, I couldn't shut up about it. I'm like, so this happened, but I was always making videos and I always wanted to go into it. And like I used to look up to you guys and be like, maybe I want to go into radio or Ryan Secrets, like maybe I want to be a host. Like, that's what I always wanted to do. Um, and then once I studied broadcast journalism at Chapman, so I went to school for it. And then when I graduated, it was a pandemic. And so I was like, Well, I can't go get a job because there's nothing happening right now in the world. And TikTok was like just beginning. So I was like, let me just start posting everything I can on TikTok. And I was just throwing things at the wall until like something stuck. But that was kind of the thing that kicked it off. I never, I don't think anyone thought, like, oh, social media is like an end-all goal, at least like when I was even in school. Like that was never my goal. I was like, oh, I'll use social media to help me get a job to be a host. But now I feel like since 2020 on, like the world has changed so much. Right. That now it's like, oh, you actually use social media. Like hosts are using social media now. You know, it's like this whole thing that has kind of become like a beautiful. But what video was it?
SPEAKER_02Was
TikTok Breakthrough And Repeatable Series
SPEAKER_02it the cookies? Was it the yeah?
SPEAKER_01It was like baking, baking food in my car was like the first. I mean, my first like viral video was asking Miley to prom. That was in high school. That's right. But that wasn't like uh that was kind of the first thing that I was like, oh wow, the internet is so powerful. Like you can post a video and get the attention of like the biggest pop star in the world. Like, this is awesome. But I think the first thing that made it like a job was I was in Arizona and I was baking food in my car. And which is a bit we used to do, by the way.
SPEAKER_02Really? We did the chocolate chip cookies in the John Jane Rich van in 120 degrees.
SPEAKER_01See, maybe that seemed I told you I'm a stand. Like maybe it was ingrained in my brain.
SPEAKER_02But we didn't get the high-view guy, we was just stupid radio stud. But so then you started making food in your car.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so I was baking food in my car and I made that like my entire niche. Like my entire brand was just like car baking until it became winter, and then I was like, well, now I'm really don't have a job. So then I made a video being like, I'm gonna let you guys decide what I eat for a day. And I thought I was just gonna do a one-off video. And someone commented for me to eat green food, and I was like, Oh, that's funny, like I'll do that. And that video got a million views. And then a comment on that video said, Oh, you should do blue food. So then I was like, Oh, that's cool. So then I did blue food and red food, and then I just kept doing it. And I think that would be like my biggest piece of advice to anyone making content is like when something works, like just keep doing it over and over and over again because it will eventually like evolve into something that you never even expected. When do you know that it worked? Is there a number? I think you know more when it like stops working. Okay. You know, like I think that you can feel when it's like I've beaten this horse so much, like I have to go find a new horse.
SPEAKER_02Yes, shift gears a little bit, but still the same umbrella kind of.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I think even now, like I feel like now the content I'm doing is very like highlighting family-owned restaurants and like really finding the stories that I I'm inspired by. And I think that is like brings me soul full circle back to like what I was doing when I was in college. So I think it's like you just kind of have to keep so like for you right now, it's a full-time job. Yeah, yeah. And it's been a full-time job for me since so I was teaching at Soul Cycle when I that was like my like side hustle thing that I was doing to just make money. And I was also doing TikTok. So I would like teach my Soul Cycle classes, and then kids would come to my Soul Cycle classes that like would follow me on TikTok, and then we'd like to film dancing, doing the renegade afterwards, and it was like so hilarious and fun. Right. And then it became I quit Soul and it's been my full-time job since like 2022 or 2021. Is a full-time job okay?
SPEAKER_02I need one video a day. Is it I need one video a week? What is it?
SPEAKER_01That's a good question. I don't really have like any rhyme or reason to my scheduling of it. I always post, like I haven't gone a week without posting, probably since like 2020. Like I said, something on your feed, not stories. Yeah. I always am posting just something. I feel like I also can't go anywhere without making a video. Like I was just in London and I turned the whole trip into like a content trip because it's just like what I genuinely like to do. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But was that London trip just for you to go on vacation, or was that London trip um backed by sponsors?
SPEAKER_01That one was like I went with my friends and then I turned it into You turned it into something, but you were you paid for your tricket, you did, you went there, and then you turned it into content and then And then it because then it's kind of like a wash. And then I'm like, well, I got all this content out of it. And I can't, it's funny that whenever I don't film something, like I it like eats me up. Like I I had maybe two meals in London that I didn't film, and they were the best two meals. Yeah. I'm like, well, now I now I have to go back to post this.
SPEAKER_02It's like sometimes when I'm with the family and I don't, I'm I'm not taking my phone on me, and then something great happens.
SPEAKER_01And if I would have had my phone with me right now, something that you do so well that I'm so jealous of is I feel like you're so good in the moment. Like you're posting your stories. You're like, I think you should have a reality show. I've been saying that forever. You guys, your life, your family would be the best reality show. Like the Kardashians would be out of a job. Oh, yeah, nice. You're so good about posting, like in the moment on your stories. Like, I'm not like that. I'm not good about everything I do. I like curate to make like uh like I try to treat all my videos like little episodes of a TV show. That's how I'm like, oh that, but then it's like now I have all these stories that I could have posted from London that I didn't post.
SPEAKER_02And you did because you didn't that's that was my problem, is when you film it and you wait, I've passed it now. I don't care anymore. Yeah, right. So you like you missed out on something, but did you really miss out? Because who's it for anyway? I mean, for you it's a business, but I get it right.
SPEAKER_01But you're so good. Like, I feel like you too, like, do you has he always just posted like that? I'm now asking Blake off off camera.
Marriage In Public And Money Mixups
SPEAKER_01Sorry.
SPEAKER_02Do you want to sit down? Can we come with it?
SPEAKER_01No, you look amazing. The only, the only person who or the only, I'm a big fan of you, but I'm an even bigger fan of Blake's. So am I.
SPEAKER_02So what were you asking her?
SPEAKER_01I would like because you always like have you always just been supportive of him? Like, I feel like you never mind that he's just filming posting you like.
SPEAKER_00No, I mean, I feel like, in all honesty, that we live in a fishbowl and it's everything. I mean, a perfect example is the other day. Um, I wrote a text message to him and Dutch, and it was geared towards Dutch. And the reason I sent it, I CC'd him on it was because I wanted to be a serious parent for a minute because I looked through his, I saw that he, I get an alert that his account is down to $2. And I saw that it was down to $2. So I'm not sure. So I'm like, what is Dutch spending his money on? Like, what the heck? And so I start to look and I see like line leaping. He's paying $20 to be in the front of the line and call at a college bar. I'm like, dude, you can't do this. So I spelled out look, we're not paying for line leaping, we're not paying for weed, we're not paying for alcohol, we're not paying for zinc and all the things, right? And I CC'd him so the Dutch would know that I was serious about it. Well, so then um I look through, I start looking through my um my Venmo account, and the Venmo says Lisa Cheese, $10. Um, Leon Nuian or something, $20. And I was like, Dutch Van S. Like, who are these people and what are you what are you paying them for? And it turns out the day before I was at the nail salon and they gave me a QR code, and Lisa Cheese was the nail lady, though. But I posted that.
SPEAKER_02What you're getting at is I posted that because I thought it was.
SPEAKER_00She thought Dutch was paying for sex.
SPEAKER_02She thought Dutch was paying for sex. Dying. So she thought Lisa Cheese. She thought Lisa Cheese was a prostitute. And meanwhile, it was your nail lady. And it was her nail lady. That is and it was like sex for $20. Even we called Dutch, and he was like, sex for $20. I mean, but I can get it.
SPEAKER_01What is line leaping? Also, I feel like that's like every everything I do right now is boycotting lines. Oh, that's right. Well, like a UV.
SPEAKER_02A U of A, you go to a bar and there's a huge line to get in. You can pay to get to the front of the line. What?
SPEAKER_00You pay $28 to go into the bar.
SPEAKER_02Yes, you get you don't have to wait the line for an hour. You get to the front. Oh my God. Okay.
SPEAKER_01I guess I should make that my whole new.
SPEAKER_02Get your brain thinking. Wow. Yeah, you need to go film that U of A. Maybe you can do reverse. Let me pay you to weigh the line. Yes. There's gotta be you got to do a different spin on that. Okay, yeah, I'll think about that.
SPEAKER_00But yeah.
SPEAKER_02Anyway.
SPEAKER_00So that's the point is that at one point everything is free game in our household. Yes.
SPEAKER_02But I love that.
SPEAKER_01That's inspiring. But this is about you, man. Okay, sorry, sorry. It's hard because I'm a super fan of you guys. So I'm turning it back on you, but hit me.
SPEAKER_02I want to know about so
Agents Brand Deals And Creative Briefs
SPEAKER_02you get to a point here in Arizona where you have to leave because of the success you're getting. You have to, did you get an agent? Did you get uh signed with an agency and they tell you you've got to go to New York or LA? Like, what's that story?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so I was I on well, I went to school in Orange County, so I was already like in LA. And then I was in Arizona because of the pandemic, but then I went back to LA because I was at Seoul, and I got my agent. My agent actually came to my Soul Cycle class. So I was teaching at Seoul and I was telling them, like, oh, originally like one of my friends was helping me just kind of like negotiate brand deals. I was like, I have no idea what I'm doing. Like, can you help me? So she was helping me. But was she just in your soul class and recognized you? Oh or did she come? With my my agent now, yeah, was at they were like, Oh, like what how is this going for you? Whatever. And then I was like, Oh, I would honestly love to like pick your brain. So we went and got coffee, and then they're at UTA, so which is like a massive like talent agency. United talent agency.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they have huge stars, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So it's been awesome. So I've been like with them, and it's so helpful because one thing about me is I get so excited about things, like that I want to do things, like I would do things for free. Really? Like, I'm just like, I get so excited, I'm like, oh yes, I'll do this and I'll do this. So it's like nice to have someone else like there negotiating all that. But so I've been with them now, I think since like 2021. Like I've been But how's it work?
SPEAKER_02So you sign with her, and then she's like, hey, um, there's this line of tennis shoes. They want you to do whatever. What do you think? What what what are some ideas? Or do they come to you with the idea too?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, all of like the brand stuff is really all inbound. So like I get emails from brands being like, we have this campaign, and then I'm like, Thank you so much, so excited, looping in my team. And then like they handle it from there. UTA, but then but then UTA says, Thumbs up, we like it. Yeah, well, then they come, then they like negotiate with the all the all the money, all that, and then they come back to me and they send me like an offer, and then it's up to me to be like if I want to do it. An offer of the money, yeah, the money and like what it would be. So, like one reel and one TikTok, or one this and one that. So it's all very like, I was just having this conversation. I was just at lunch with my sister, and I was telling her that, like, kind of the same thing. Like, I'd really get so excited about everything that I'm just like amped to do right anything. So it's kind of a weird, like, I don't have that, like, oh, I won't do this because it's open.
SPEAKER_02So the agent tells you, here's it, I mean what's a what's what's a brand that you've done a deal with?
SPEAKER_01Like with the arena thing, that was with Electrolyte. So Electrolyte is she's their like sponsor, and I did a video for Electrolyte.
SPEAKER_02But wait, before you go further, what I'm saying is, does electrolyte say, here are three ideas? Or they're gonna say, Matt, you give us ideas. Yeah. And you got to pitch them ideas, or you sign the deal and then you just go.
SPEAKER_01They yeah, I have to pitch the ideas. So they'll send like a brief over. So, like, an example right now, I'm working with like Shamrock Farms, which is a milk brand here in Arizona. Yeah. And they're like, um, their tagline, what they gave me was like the sweet, sweet treat. It's the best sweet treat. So, like, we, whatever your content is, we want it to tie back to like it's the best sweet treat. So then it's up to me to like come up with the whole concept and whatever that is, and like fit it in as organically as possible.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01But with the electrolyte one, it was just like we're promoting the US Open, like go wild. So I was like, oh, okay, well, I want to interview Arena and then I want her to invite my dad to the US Open, and I'll fly my dad out for the US Open and I'll document our time there together. So it's like it's And they're like, we love it. Yeah. And they got her buy-in right away. Yeah, because they were already doing like an event with her, so like, oh, it's perfect. So then do you actually pay for your ticket and your that one I did, yeah. I I flew my dad out here. So I'm just gonna do it. I'll take care of it. Yeah, because it like it's a wash, because like they're paying me. Right. And it's like such a fun experience for my dad. And they gave me like amazing tickets to the open. So everything like it all comes from my like creative. It's not right, there's never a time where they're gonna tell you what to do. Never.
SPEAKER_02And have you ever had someone try to tell you what to do, and you're like forgetting them out?
SPEAKER_01No, there are times where I honestly like kind of wish. I feel like now I'm at a place where I'm like sometimes my brain, I'm just like, I don't, I kind of just wish they would just tell tell me what to do, you know. I know. You know, like I like I love the creative when I'm like excited, but there are certain times where I'm like, okay, just if you just I can make a great commercial for you if you want me just to tell me exactly what to to do. Because my brain goes so crazy, and I'm like, I'm gonna do this and this and this. And then sometimes they have to like reel me back in. Right, right, right.
SPEAKER_02No, exactly. Have you ever done anything and you got in trouble? Ooh. Cause I have. Yeah. But that's another one. I I bet you have.
SPEAKER_01I feel like you you have probably done some crazy things.
SPEAKER_00Walks the line every day.
SPEAKER_01But how does your guys' work though? Because like you have your own deals, and then like you have the podcast deal. Like everything is like different, or you kind of just like could you market yourself as like one thing, like your social and podcast and everything?
SPEAKER_02Um, I I guess I could. I don't really everything I do is uh when you because you listen to show, uh, you know, it's all ADHD all over the place. Yeah. I have no guidance, no. She she pretty much runs what she can, but I don't but uh you know, let me let me backtrack. When it comes to my social and stuff, I don't do anything personally. Everything goes to the radio station. I don't do any social on my she gets mad at me because I do everything for free.
SPEAKER_00Well, yeah, just like you said.
SPEAKER_02I feel like you she's like, you need to be charging people for whatever. Like I go to this place, I love this place, I'm giving them some love. I don't have the cojones to go and ask for money of anybody.
SPEAKER_00But wait a minute. This is this is the answer to his question, though. It's it's a bit separate. So the radio station, he does the endorsements, right? And he said no because he won't he won't talk about something that he doesn't believe in. And and so he, I mean, he really won't do that. But he also has his personal social media, which he's never gotten one single solitary penny for.
SPEAKER_02What?
SPEAKER_00Not a penny ever.
SPEAKER_02I don't what yeah, first of all, I don't know how to do it.
SPEAKER_00He has and he has this podcast. And he has this podcast that he's working on sponsorships.
SPEAKER_02This one right here.
SPEAKER_00So this podcast. So he he doesn't make money outside of that.
SPEAKER_01John Jay.
SPEAKER_00I know.
SPEAKER_01Okay, we're gonna what day is it? Okay, this isn't September 29th. And this is the last day that you're not making money from this. That's insane, especially when you have impact. Like you, I bet you've helped so many restaurants, really. Sometimes where I can't get back in.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, sometimes he does things where he promotes something and we can't then we can't get in.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the gym I go to, I love this gym so much and the doctor so much, and I don't want to ever talk about them because I want to be able to get in there and get my time and whatever, right? Right, but big time. So now, so when your agent pitches you an idea, right? So it's just turnkey like that. Like the Sebalinka. So were there people you had to meet to get there, or you got your ticket, you showed up. Hey, Sebalinka's in that back room waiting for you. Yeah. Did you meet her first and then you put the camera and set it up?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so that one it was like that was better because she was like doing press, so they had it like all scheduled out, but she could not have been like nicer, really. I'm like a real like super fan of her now.
SPEAKER_00So I have been a super fan of her since the day she got on the court. Like I love her, I want her to win every time. I enjoy her videos, her story is amazing. Her when her dad passed away, and their boyfriend, and her boyfriend now is you know, the guy that owns Oakberry or her her fiance. I didn't even know that.
SPEAKER_01You know, is it oakberry in Arizona?
SPEAKER_00She's not yet, but but he's you know, he's traveling around the world opening all these oak berries. That's how they met.
SPEAKER_01Oh, she was gonna be. We also go to Oak Berry with her then. Yes, she was everything, she was so cool.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I just I mean, I I just think she's the greatest, and she's a tough competitor, and I just I love her.
SPEAKER_02Wait, so let me ask you this about the is there ever been a brand deal that you wanted and you went after on your own instead of them? So right now, everybody comes to you, but have you ever said, you know what? I want a Nike deal. I want I want to deal with Mervyn's. Is Mervin still around? Mervyn's. No, what the heck is Mervyn's?
SPEAKER_00There's no Mervins.
SPEAKER_01What is a Mervyn deal? Now I kind of want to get a Mervyn's deal. I guess maybe maybe I need to go scare.
SPEAKER_02Like Ross or a clothing line.
SPEAKER_01Do you ever I want this? Let me go after this. I'm trying to think. I feel really grateful that like a lot has been inbound, but there's like dream brands that have reached out that I get like so excited about. That they have reached out. Yeah. Okay. What's a dream brand that reached out? And did you do a deal or not? It's still. I mean, I feel like when I was especially in my like really food challengey things, I was like doing like McDonald's, Taco Bell. Like those are just sick because those are like iconic. Right. Like, and to be able to say that I worked with them is so epic. Is it a one-time deal? Yeah, so they're kind of like a lot of them are one-off like deals, but then there's certain ones that would be like a Dave's killer bread. That's like a brand, and I love them. And those are like longer deals that I've done. When you did Dave's killer bread, did you actually meet with Dave? No, but I would love to. Because it was that whole story about him being in prison. Wait, that would be sick. Yeah. Okay, maybe. Hi, Dave. Maybe we do. Yeah. Well, you can't.
SPEAKER_00You gotta get Dave on the podcast.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. We should do a joint podcast with Dave from Dave's Killer Bread. Are you gonna have your own podcast ever? Is that coming? I don't know. I feel like there's people like you that are just so good that I don't know if that would be you are obscenely talented.
SPEAKER_00Wait, I have you thought you know what?
SPEAKER_02He's the only person I've talked about this before. I've done, I think I've done 65 episodes, and I've never had one person ask me a question. It's always me interviewing, which is okay because that's I'm the host I'm interviewing. But so far you've asked me 30 questions.
SPEAKER_01Well, thanks. But that's kind of my like cross to bear is I love asking people questions. Like, so I would love to do something like that, but I really think genuinely like there's people that are just Oh, you could totally do it.
SPEAKER_00And you should be on a TV show.
SPEAKER_01Well, say less. I mean, I'll be on your guys' reality show.
SPEAKER_00I want you to be on my TV show when I when we figure it out.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, would you guys actually do that? Like, I'm shocked. Yes, I don't know why you guys haven't just hired a videographer to follow you around and you make your own reality show and put it on YouTube and then use that to pitch it out. That's how you do it. Because you got you have like a million and a half followers on YouTube, right? And like, and people like then like we live in a world where like why are you waiting for like a production company to it's all this like hodgepodge of like waiting a yes and a no, and it's like we live in a world where you can just do it for yourself, right? You know, you're absolutely right, and that's what they say.
SPEAKER_02That's what my sister says. Just go do it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because isn't she she's like a huge producer?
SPEAKER_02Oh, dude, I don't have to talk to you about her off air, right? Yeah, please.
SPEAKER_00Maybe I could we don't we can't say it on air.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I don't know about what she does for Olivia. She runs Mr. Beast's company.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god. So then she's exactly what you need.
SPEAKER_02She would tell you need, yeah, yeah. Hi, sis. Yeah, yeah, she's what we all need. Oh, I've talked to her about pitching you to Mr. Beast.
Boycotting Lines And Restaurant Storytelling
SPEAKER_02Yeah, please. Right? Isn't that sick?
SPEAKER_01Well, honestly, that would be amazing for what I'm doing now because what I'm doing now with like the restaurant stuff, I'm like, my whole thing in New York, the lines are insane. Like, right, people are lining up for frozen yogurt in New York for four hours, like it's out of control. And so I've now like pivoted to like boycotting the lines, and then I go find a family-owned restaurant that like is struggling. That's good. And so you find a frozen yogurt place that has no lines, yes, that like needs help. And then I go and tell their story, and it's like a whole thing. But I would love to bring like a Mr. Beast and go to these struggling restaurants and like I'm trying to find someone who would like blow, blow these restaurants up even more because it's like so impactful. Have you done it and gone back and seen the results? Yeah, and I have like the the people will reach out to me after and be like, We've had more sales since your video than I've had like in the last two years, or like I've raised like sixty thousand dollars for restaurants, like I've done all these things, it's like so cool to see the impact, but like a Mr. Beast or someone like that, I feel like there's so much more I could do if I can collaborate with like other people too.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's a great idea. Yeah, but when you you know, and going back to your agent, because I think that's so great. You have an age with an agency that I've heard of before, you know, it's not some weird agency. So does your agent she you've had that one agent for four years or whatever, right? So do you consider her like are are you friends with her? Like you text her, it's like stuff. Yeah, and does she also represent other influencers or does she have actors and actresses and stuff?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, both. So, like I have well, technically there's two agents that I have at UTA, and I'm like friendly with them both. Like go to Coachella, like, do we've all like hang out and stuff. Oh, yeah, because I asked you to give me that Bieber hoodie when you were at Coachella. Oh my god, yes. Did you ever get that? I did get it. Oh, heck yeah. Okay, yeah, that merch sign was insane. I'm like, I love you, John Jane, I'm a super fan, but I'm not standing into that. Also, I think you asked me once I left, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but then you sent me a link and you have to check this out. I ended up getting the hoodie. Okay, good. In fact, I just I just got the his shoes yesterday.
SPEAKER_01I want his his um wired headphones. I haven't seen those yet. He's like doing wired headphones, which like now is like the trendy thing. Like, I guess. Oh, yeah, that's what Dutch just posted that on his TikTok. Yeah, like Gen Z doesn't like if you have AirPods, it's like embarrassing, I guess. Because the EMF and how bad it is for you, right? Is that what the I'm like it's hilarious that Gen Z is saying like that they're using wired headphones because of how bad AirPods are for you, yet they're all like smoking. Oh, I think. I'm like, okay, but we were picking and choosing what's bad for you.
SPEAKER_02So wait, wait, wait. So you have this two agents, and so it they have actors. Yeah. And you go, your friends let me go to Coachella, but do they have actors that like we would know we've heard of?
SPEAKER_01I'm sure. I mean, UTA like has some No, but your your people. My two people, they work with a bunch of other like influencers that are like very big names that are Do you know them too? Uh the other influencers, yeah. Like, do you do stuff with them? Um, like sometimes I but I don't really ever ask like they that is one thing that's nice is they'll like connect you with other people if you need it, but I haven't really like done that.
SPEAKER_02Oh, because I was gonna say, couldn't you uh ask your agent to help you with the restaurants? Yeah, connect you with some. But I would go, I wouldn't want to go with another influencer like that, unless it's a Mr. Beast. But I wonder, like, like the thing you I remember you did David Beckham. Maybe you could take David Beckham to one of these restaurants.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's that's like where my brain is going right now. It'd be a cool way to like morph the world. Or I just was in London and I filmed with this guy who does, he's like a massive foodie there. So I was like, oh, that's a cool way to like tap into the London scene. Like, what does he think? And where where does he think I should go? And so it's like it's very helpful. And it's cool how many people there are out there right now that are like really wanting to use their content and influence for like something greater than just themselves. Are you editing it all yourself? Yeah. On your phone, or you have computers?
Editing Workflow And Algorithm Reality
SPEAKER_01All on my phone, and I really should I need a computer. I don't even like have a comp I have a computer, but I never turn it on. Like I do everything on your phone. Everything on your phone. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And you film it all yourself too, right? So it's not not like you have some crew behind you, you're doing it all yourself.
SPEAKER_01Honestly, the amount of places I walk into, it's so embarrassing where it's like just me. They like there was this place I filmed at right before I left for London in New York, and they baked me so many pastries because they thought I had a whole crew coming. Like I had scheduled the shoe and I showed up, and they're like, wait, where's your crew? And I was like, This is this is me.
SPEAKER_02So they're like, No, we're not gonna do it with this. You bring like a tripod, you set up and then and then so the restaurants there, they bake the pastries, and then it's three, two, one, and you go, today we're gonna do it.
SPEAKER_01No, honestly, my filming is like it's literally this. Like, I just film everything like while I be talking to you, and I have it like here so that we're still like making eye contact, and then I voice it all over. So, like everything is like that's why I go and and people there they'll be like nervous, and I'm like, no, don't worry, because I don't even use your sound. Like, I voice, I voice it's like. So you film it all, don't really say anything. Yeah, then it's and it makes my editing so long because like my more my video I edited yesterday, I had like 67 minutes and I cut it down to one minute. Oh and so my dad was visiting me for the open and we filmed so much together. And then when I posted the video, he was like, What the hell is this? Like we filmed for hours. Like, why am I in this for one second? So that is for TikTok and Instagram? Yeah, it's just all the same across all the platforms, okay. But on YouTube as well, yeah, which that I need to do long form.
SPEAKER_02I was gonna say, couldn't you just make a different version and even do an hour, even 40, 15 minutes?
SPEAKER_01That I do, and that's where like I need to practice what I preach of yelling at you guys that you need to hire a videographer and post. Like, I also should do that too. I I should I will get a videographer one day and and assign them to long form. But like my brain is so short form focused right now that it's hard for me. Like I just finished my day one of London, like I'm already excited to get it to edit my day two. Like, I now don't want to pause and be like, oh, let me go edit my long form. What are you editing on? I use Cap Cut. Is that what you use?
SPEAKER_02Uh no, I I use the edit from Instagram, but okay, that's good. But I don't do what you do. Yeah, I like like all my little sound effects. It's wonderful.
SPEAKER_01But I'm I'm like so crazy about like my poor friend who was helping me film in London, like my intros. I made him cross the street like 40 times to get this intro. Like we and one person would mess up, and I like I honestly need to post like a blooper because it's embarrassing. Like, I'm so specific. I'm like, I need to get the perfect intro.
SPEAKER_02The lighting has to be perfect, so like and it shows your stuff is great. That's fantastic. So, what is is there what's the longest video you've made?
SPEAKER_01Honestly, maybe like a minute 30, and then I had a comment being like, This is too long.
SPEAKER_02Well, because you know you got to get people in the first two seconds, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, all of our attention spans like we're all like broken.
SPEAKER_02No, I shot a video the other day, and this is how my brain works. I I shot uh an unboxing video, and it was 10 minutes long, and I started to edit it, and I got down to seven minutes, and then my brain goes like forget it. If they don't want to watch it, don't watch it, right? I like that. And then I post it, I had like they had like 10,000 views, and like so far that's good. I just posted last night. I'm like, that's uh that's I look at it. Okay, so 10,000 people watched my unbox, my seven-minute unboxing video. Visually, that's to me the year, the foot the basketball arena. Fully. I'm like, that's about 10,000 people. Sells 12,000 people sell that arena. Like 12,000 people sell that arena. That many people watched my video. That's amazing to me. Just 10,000. But you have millions of people watching. That's country, that's cities.
SPEAKER_01Well, I love that perspective. That perspective is actually amazing. Cause I think that so many people, especially that like want to get started, they get so discouraged by the numbers. And it's like when you put it into perspective like that, right? You're like, whoa, that many people. But it's like we all are so like we get so hard on ourselves about the numbers and stuff. When in reality, it's like that's incredible to break that down and be like, wow, an entire arena, like walking out in front of that would feel amazing.
SPEAKER_02Right. Like uh, we did you did the um uh I got her opening up her wedding dress that she hasn't seen in 30 years. Oh, and it was really emotional. She started crying, and I think it was like 90,000 people watched it. I'm like, that's like a NASCAR race uh in Daytona. That's a whole that's a whole bigger than an arena. That's massive. And that many people watched our video. I go, that's incredible to me. But then you get the people, and and this is the right way. You probably like this, uh, where it's like, wait, the algorithm is this, and you got to do this. And uh it could have been if we would have then made it shorter and did it whatever, we'd probably get a million views, right?
SPEAKER_01The algorithm though is like it's such a losing battle, like to try to figure out that. Or if you ever like see someone on TikTok being like, nothing kills me more, not to be mean, but like the people on TikTok that are like, these are the three things you need to do, and then you like click on their profile and they have no their. I'm like, why? Like these people that are eager to start posting content are gonna get onto this app and listen to you, and it's like it's not that's not what you should do.
SPEAKER_02Like, I mean, these are the three things to do to get more followers, like that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like that kind of stuff, exactly. Right, right, right. I'm always just like I roll so hard at that because I'm like, I don't think anyone who's starting to post content should like focus so much on that. It's like such a losing battle. Like, there was a time on TikTok where like I used to delete my videos if they didn't get a million views. Like I had I was in this pattern of like every video I had was a million, two million, five million. And now I'm like, oh, 10,000 views. Like, heck yeah, you know, because it's like it's so freeing to just like let go of that because it's such a losing battle to like be so obsessed with like your views because it's nothing, everything ebbs and flows, and you'll like think one thing is the best thing ever and post it and it doesn't blow up, and then one thing you don't really care about like blows up. And so you just have no, like there's no rhyme or reason to any of that.
SPEAKER_02Is there anything you've edited and that you were excited about, but you just never posted it? You just never got, or do you like you go back in your drafts? Like, I had these all these drafts that I screwed up, and I'm like, maybe I'll post them, just see what happens.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, do you use like trial reels at all? That's like something I'm telling all my friends. I'm telling all my friends to use trial reels because it's like really helping them grow. Like if you're trying to start your account, uh-huh, trial reels is like a great thing to do because you can play around and see like what works, what doesn't work. But while you're talking, I think something that you should do is Twitch. Twitch? I could so see you being a live streamer. Do you know anything about live streaming? Yeah, I just live stream on Instagram live.
SPEAKER_00Don't our kids have Twitch?
SPEAKER_01I think they play video games on Twitch. I don't know. Yeah, like you would be an ideal live streamer because you're so comfortable just filming yourself
3 A.M. Routine And Mantras
SPEAKER_01all day long. You could wake up, like you're can you walk me through your routine, your morning routine? Like, what hour of the day are you waking up? You're interviewing me again. No, I have to because that I think about you all the time. I was just talking about you. When was I talking about you? Because of like I had to get up early and I'm like, how do you guys do this? You do this every single day. I get up at 3 a.m.
SPEAKER_02That's sick. And I go downstairs and I make my son Jake. My son Jake works in construction and he gets up around 3:30. I wake up at 3 and I I write my journal. I read a motivational book, I read a little quote from the Bible every day. I go downstairs and I drink my electrolytes and a green tea, ice green tea, and then I make my son a cup of coffee. And then I wait for him to come time to come downstairs, and then we chat for a little bit, and then I go to the gym and I do about three miles on the treadmill, and then I do a little weight lifting routine while I do this um chant. What is it? What is it?
SPEAKER_00It's a chant so it's a chant.
SPEAKER_02I my very first interview on this podcast with these gurus from India that blew my mind. They told me about this chant, and I do this chant every I have it looped cloud while I'm working out. And then I do hot tub uh and I get in my hot tub and I do um I do I I manifest things, I pray, and then I go from the hot tub to the cold plunge, the cold plunge shower. What time this is at 4 a.m. when is this? This is around four. So I get to the radio station now around 5 30.
SPEAKER_01Holy moly.
SPEAKER_02On the way to the radio station, I in silence I manifest and talk out loud. I say certain things. I created this. Um you ever heard how like a lot of radio people or TV people have these phrases they say like unique New York, unique New York to loosen up your mouth. Because you know, if you're if you're uh if you're a a track and field person or you're an athlete, you stretch totally before you get on the track, before you play basketball, you stretch. So as a person who talks for a living, I always felt I needed to stretch. So on my way in, I created this sentence that I feel touches every it moves every part of your mouth. So I go, Larry went to Applebee's. Larry went to Applebee's. So I'm like driving on my Larry went to Applebee's. Wait, I'm up to this. I'm stealing that. I'm stealing that. Larry went to Applebee's. And then I'll do the alphabet. I'll go A B, C, D E F G A J J K. I'm gonna pick your A C Y Z. And I loosen up my mouth so that when I'm on the air talking, wow, I'm loose. And then I pull into the I I kind of go over things I'm grateful for in my life. I think you got to be grateful in life, you know. And then I out loud say three things that I really want to happen today. There are three things I want to happen. And then when I pull in the park, I have a couple mantras I say by myself about um, I host the number one radio show in America. I'm the host of the number one radio show in America, I am the number one radio show in America. I say it over and over and over again, and then I say something wonderful is gonna happen to me today. And one more thing I add on the drive, Matt, is I pick up a picture of my parents and I talk to each one of them. I talk to my mom, I talk to my dad, and then I park the car and I go in and have a show. I'm gonna so that's the that's she's gonna cry. That's the short version of what I do every day.
SPEAKER_00Every day. That is so do you forgot to say that you kiss your wife goodbye? That's the first thing I do. I kiss her goodbye.
SPEAKER_01That is so special. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00For 30 years, he's kissed me every single day before.
SPEAKER_01Okay, clip this and send it to me so I can rewatch that every single morning. That is so special. I'm obsessed with that, and it's so true though. Like the way you speak about yourself and the things you say is a reality. Right. So you're so like that's so powerful, right?
SPEAKER_02But I've been saying I host the number one radio show in America for the longest time, and it's and you do. I can't break. I break, I get the top five.
SPEAKER_01But that's amazing. Like, seriously, that's amazing. Oh, well, thank you. I love that. Okay, but just remember this. Larry went to Applebee's. Larry went to Applebee's, but Larry went to Applebee's. Every word Larry went to Apple's lunatic in the Larry went to Applebee's. Okay, I'm gonna start doing that.
SPEAKER_00I'm going to be on the mouth on the train, and you're gonna be going, Larry went to Applebee's.
SPEAKER_01Unique New York, but I thought that never got done. You know, and well, and to be up, like you have to be up and on it. Like that's really I'm really impressed. Right. And you still, and so and then when you guys rap, what time do you rap? 10. Okay.
SPEAKER_02We rap at 10, and then we we'll tape a couple things or we have a meeting, and then you know, and then I try to leave. Um, I try to leave the radio station by 10:30. So I could be, I like to work out at 11. Work out from 11 to 12, 12 to 1220, I do a red light bed. Then I go to the radio, I go home and I'll have some yogurt with some protein powder, Matt. Then I do sauna, then I cold plunge, hot tub again, then I'll uh sit down with my family, then I work, then I plan out the next day's show. But I got I you're so good at it. You just got me talking about my shit. Okay, good.
SPEAKER_01Which I well, I have I have one more, I have one more question, actually. Because I I'm genuinely curious. How like do you feel about the shift? Like You now have been doing this for so long. Yeah. And when I was sitting in that parking lot, sobbing and like looking up to you, like that was the only way that we got anything. Like waking up, turning on, listening to 104.7. Like that was all that we did. So now, like, how how has like it evolved? And what do you like? What are the conversations like in a radio station?
SPEAKER_02So it's interesting because people say, Well, what's going on with radio? Well, radio is that this is this is radio. Totally. You know, everything is radio, right? It's about connection, it's about communication. So radio's Instagram, radio's TikTok, radio is the frequency. You can get it, you know, the iHeart app, it's right. Everything's so it's it's gotten bigger.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I think there's more people listening to the radio now than ever been ever. So it hasn't really I mean, now you just gotta look at you know, before you could show up at work in sweats and a t-shirt, yeah. And now because we're on TV, we're on uh on YouTube, we're on TikTok, we're on every. So we kind of got to dress up a little, you know. Back in the day, the the old radio guy was a fat guy in a Hawaiian shirt. You know, now we gotta be a little bit more down.
SPEAKER_01But I think you guys were always on TV because I remember that we have been for a long time. You guys were always like those Rich was always on channel three.
SPEAKER_02He was always about dressing nice, and like I remember we went on stage one time to interview some to bring somebody out on stage, and I wore shorts, and he was like, dude, don't ever wear shorts on stage. And I was like, Why? Because it's a bad look. And I'm like, okay. And then he was right. Whenever I see something and someone's in shorts on stage, I'll go, but that's a bad look. But that's just anyway, that's just my thing. Enough about me.
SPEAKER_00But you know what I also think through the whole radio thing, I think the human connection is so important because we've kind of lost that along the way. Like you you just don't hear human voices and see human people, and you know, there's so much AI and everything that it's important to have that relationship with somebody. And I think companies now are realizing it, you know, and they're starting to figure out how do we make this human connection? How do we put more bank branches in each neighborhood so that they have to come into the branch branch?
SPEAKER_01Well, that's why you know bookstores are coming back, toy stores. No, fully. Yeah, everyone is like so craving like the pendulum that always swings. I think it like swung this way, and now everyone's like, actually, I want to see, I want to come in and do things in real life and be with people. Yeah. What's your body fat? You see veins everywhere. Do you know? I honestly I've been I one thing that's I am like in my day-to-day life, like when I'm in New York, I'm like locked in. Like I I go film and I do the food and all that, but like and my routine is very structured. I have gone when I go off the rails, like the floodgates get open. So right now, like especially when I'm in Arizona, I'm just eating everything in sight. So I appreciate that. Right now, my body fat is probably way different than the other thing.
SPEAKER_02There was a we're worried that you had no shirt on and you were shredded.
SPEAKER_01Maybe at Coachella. Was it Coachella? Yeah, you can't see it. Yeah, but but I like that. Like, I like to have something that I'm like, let me get so shredded for. I feel like you're also like that. Like, I feel like you, you like I've like I feel like you always would do like crazy, like trying to diet.
SPEAKER_02My weight's fluctuated, my health's fluctuated, but I'm healthier than I've ever been right now. Yeah. But okay, so what is the your most number one popular video? You know what it is, but the most of all time. What's the number?
SPEAKER_01Well, the one I'm most proud of right now is like I have a million likes on one of my most recent videos on Instagram. And to me, that's really like I use the perspective thing because I'm like, wow, one million people took the time to actually like click like on this. Like it that means that they actually were like impacted by it. And it was on my like day something of boycotting lines. So, like one of my most recent videos, because I obviously like my older TikToks, like those had crazy views and crazy engagement, but they now are so long ago that I'm like, I think what I'm most proud of is like the that like a million likes on my video, and it like also impacted this restaurant. Message me. Like, are you looking at Instagram more than you are TikTok? I think right now I'm most eager to like grow my Instagram because I love TikTok, but it feels more like the Wild West. And I also feel like I kind of like conquered that. I was like, okay, this was something I wanted, I conquered it. Like YouTube, I feel like I conquered it. Instagram is still one that I'm like, oh, let's keep growing. Like, let's see where where I can go with this.
SPEAKER_02So when you talk about having an agent and income and brand deals that goes through the agents, right? But isn't there income that comes from the actual apps themselves?
SPEAKER_01And is that go through your agent or is that come to No, so that's all like on my own. And the like the way I would break it down would be like YouTube pays the best and then TikTok and then Instagram. Like I don't make any money really from my views on Instagram. I don't really know even know if you can do that. I am signed up for something and I actually always screenshot it and send it to my friends that work at Instagram, and we like have this like running joke because I literally will make like a cent. Like I'll all all like my videos will do amazing, and like for a month, they'll send me an email and be like, congratulations! Like, here's your payout, and it will like quite literally be like point one. You know what? I got one of those from YouTube.
SPEAKER_00It was more money to print the check out to send it to you.
SPEAKER_02I have a YouTube email that I get, and it tells me because I have the radio station YouTube account, which I have no idea who collects that money. But yeah, you should check. I don't know, somebody does, but then my personal I made one once for my kids, and then I post like two things on it, and then I get an email every once in a while that says I made like three dollars on my YouTube channel. Yeah, well, but or something, or or I had, I wish I could.
SPEAKER_01But you should be posting all your reels onto YouTube. I'm just gonna become your manager. You should I'm ready. Please hit me up and like ask me some questions. Do you like this? Like, why do you like you should have like a drink right here that you're getting that's a sponsor of your podcast? I know I should, huh? I know. I don't know. I'll help you.
SPEAKER_02You do you have drink, you have brand deals?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, let's give you some electrolyte, set it up right now. There you go.
SPEAKER_02Get the electrolyte people. Tell your agent, yeah. Have your agent be my influencer agent. I can be the smallest uh account in the Amazon.
SPEAKER_00Do you really do you have somebody at Instagram? Yeah, I have some friends there that like, yeah, because I find it so interesting because his Instagram account, like he has the highest amount of engagement in all of iHeart. I usually maybe you're second, but anyways, but he that's the thing with him is is he he has this incredible engagement and they show him the analytics and everything, but the the number isn't moving up, and it's the same with the foundation. The followers, the same with the foundation, we're like stuck at 71,000. Yeah, how is it? And our social media is so much better now than it ever has been.
SPEAKER_01That's the other thing, too, is you guys have like, I just in I love anyone that has like a purpose, and I feel like you guys have such purpose, like what you're doing, and you were doing that before, like you were OG, like with your foundation. That was like before that was a thing, even I feel like invented that to me. Like it's actually remarkable. So I feel like that. I don't know what the advice should be there of like the growth, but you should be proud of yourself because it's amazing. Thank you for stopping by the shelter. That helped us. Yeah, that was so special.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was fun. I love seeing you.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so I want to get back to income. Yeah,
Building A Career Beyond Views
SPEAKER_02I remember your mom. When I saw your mom, this is a couple years ago. She told me what you were pulling in a month and it was ridiculous. So, do you freak out? Do you ever like pinch yourself on that?
SPEAKER_01Fully. I think also because like my mom was a school teacher my entire life. My dad worked for the state. Like, I grew up in our like in adjacent to Arcadia, where everyone is like, you know, the house, like we would walk by the houses on Exeter, and I'd be like, Oh my god, like I want that one day. Like, I always just like loved that. And I think that like I love my family and I love the way I grew up, but like it's I always like wanted more. And I remember like my dad, I love him, so I'm sorry to put him on the spot. But like there were so many times growing up that we'd be that I would always hear him say, like, we're poor, like, we're poor. And I just remember like being in my room. I'm like, I will never be poor. Like, I was just like, I was like so determined. So I think like I love that now I'm able to do what I love and like buy my parents things and like pay for my parents to do things. It's like so special. But also, like my mom still works at Lululemon and like will be like, you're not buying my groceries and all that stuff.
SPEAKER_02So, like, yeah, I think what have you been able to buy them? It's been pretty exciting.
SPEAKER_01That's such a good question. Well I'm trying to think like experience. I think that that's like the greatest thing.
SPEAKER_02I think the greatest thing ever.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think now is like I just bought, like, she's like, Oh, I want to try the new Lola blankets that are like $300. So I'm like, I can buy her something like silly like that, but also like bring her to New York, like give her these experiences, like bring him to New York. Like, I just think that's like more special than anything, is like having these moments like with my parents that I'll just like never. What about for you? How have you treated yourself? Like not having to worry. I don't I live a very like similar life as to like I've always lived. I don't like have a Ferrari or like I don't like splurge on anything like that. Like when you went to London, did you go first class? I actually went business, like the in between, because I was like, I was like, it was $14,000 to go. And I'm like, that's insane. Like I didn't need to, but I I'll I'll first class it up on like a New York to LA moment. But I think that like I live a very normal life, but I just love not having to like worry. Like it's so freeing to be like, like I was at a bodega the other day, and it this girl behind me was saying that she's asking him how much the sandwich was because she had seven dollars to spend for the entire week of food. And I heard her saying that, and then I bought her her lunch because I was like, and I walked out and I was like, it's in like I'm so lucky, like I'm so lucky that I never have to like pause and be like, oh, do I have enough to like get this sandwich? You know, and it's like that's such a blessing to be able to say, and so I just want to like live in that forever. I don't need to like you're so grown up, but you know, like it is, it's such a like cool thing. So I'm like, I just want to like continue that. I don't need to like be have a Rolex on my wrist. Like I've never been like attracted to that.
SPEAKER_02You're saving your money too, you're investing or you're you got someone handling your money, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So that's nice.
SPEAKER_02And I'm just started like investing and I'm some you handle who like someone's handling your money that in New York or through the your agency found you somebody?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that is someone just like through like Chase. I have like a Chase investor person, but I'm like that all that. I also am like very un, I'm not like half, I don't have the like savvy like business part. I'm very like creative, I feel like. Right. But when it comes to all that other stuff, I'm like, oh god, I hate it.
SPEAKER_00That's him. That's why he has me.
SPEAKER_01That's I need a I need I need my co my co part because that's the thing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like it's literally like he has no idea, and then I just do it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So what's what would you say? What's the most amount of money you made in one month? One month.
SPEAKER_01I don't I don't know like I know like deal-wise. I feel weird talking about money.
SPEAKER_02I interviewed this girl who was a TikToker, and she had an $80,000 a month. And she barely had, I mean, she has nowhere near as many followers. She had, I think she has 40,000 followers, and because she got some, she had an $80,000 month.
SPEAKER_01I think what's crazy that I will say is like I think about my sisters who work like nine to five jobs and they have they're salaried, and it's like really insane that like you can make a sal a year's salary in one Instagram video. Like it's really insane. You can. Yeah, well, but but it but it's insane. Like it really is like I'll talk to them and it's just so surreal. Like it's it's really crazy. But I also know that like it could stop tomorrow. Do you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02Well, let's just say it went away.
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah, what what's you what do you do with your life? I'm really not worried because like what I love to do is like create. So like I would figure it out, you know, like I will always be creating. So TikTok shuts down tomorrow. Then I'll that happen for a couple days, totally. Yeah, yeah. So but then I like then you jump to Instagram and say the Instagram jumped down. Like the internet's never gonna break, you know. So I think there will always be some outlet. And if not, at the end of the day, what I always dreamt of doing was like trying to host on TV. So like that still would be like my dream job. Does your agent know that?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and she's is shopping you around, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And like, and I think what's interesting now with this news series is how many more like producers have tried to bite now. It's interesting, like when something starts, you you know when something's working, when like then all of a sudden people that would it that were ignoring you like are hitting you up. You know what I mean? So like there's certain like production companies that I was like trying to pitch myself into that were like maybe like kind of pushing us to the side, and now all of a sudden are like, oh, we love your no line series. And I'm like, oh well.
SPEAKER_02Are they saying that in a DM or are they saying that through your agent? Through the agent. So they and your social media does it say contact my agent? Do you put it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I have like in my my bio, like my business email.
SPEAKER_00Oh I have an idea for you.
SPEAKER_01Please.
SPEAKER_00What if you're what if you're in the line and you're at one of those locations that there's no line and then there starts to be a line, and you start a love up moment, and you have somebody buy the buy the meal for the person behind them, and then they buy the person behind them, and then they buy the person behind them, and you see how long the line goes.
SPEAKER_03Love that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I do that at Starbucks. We do, we used to when we would take the kids out to dinner, we did this so much when they were young. And we would have them as a group decide which table we were gonna buy for dinner. And we would buy somebody's dinner for for the somebody's family or wait, that's so special.
SPEAKER_01How would you pick? You like look around the restaurant?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we'd look around the restaurant and the kids would pick. And then and then now, like when I'm at Starbucks, I mean this is simple thing, but I'll be like, Oh, can you pay for I want to pay for the guy behind me and just tell them to love up?
SPEAKER_03That's so special.
SPEAKER_00It's and it would be interesting to sit there and see. I was thinking about it, it would be interesting to see how long the line went.
SPEAKER_02We did that on. I was telling that story on the air, and we were doing it on the air, telling people to love up. And the CEO of Starbucks had just spoke at ASU and he heard us on the radio. So he sent a ton of gift cards.
SPEAKER_00You said 250 gift cards to give to give to people at the line.
SPEAKER_02Um so I gotta tell you something. So I I you know I know all about you, I've known about you since you're 13. So I know you. So I I felt that I could do the interview. I don't like I don't normally research anybody, right? And definitely not going to research you because I know you. So I thought actually, I I I did what I would never do. And I thought it'd be funny to ask Chat GPT. I said, hey Chat, I'm interviewing Matt Peterson. Well who what should I ask you? And can I tell you what it said?
SPEAKER_01Please did it say who is Matt Peterson?
SPEAKER_00It said the guy who asked Miley.
SPEAKER_02Wait, wait, wait. It said ah yes. Oh no, wait.
SPEAKER_00It says ah yes.
SPEAKER_02Wait, no, because first the first part it goes. Absolutely. I'm assuming you mean Matt Peterson from Nature's Matt Peterson from Nature's Fusion Nutri, the health aging and longevity supplement guy. He's the founder and supplement uh who developed 40 plus products with a focus on healthy aging. Matt. Yes. If you could only take three supplements for the rest of your life, what would they be and why?
SPEAKER_01Oh, I like that. Okay, I can answer that. I would honestly love to answer that. You know what's funny about that? I this is something that I actually want to work on. Is like someone said to me that I'm not Googleable. Like I was trying to, like, I was in an interview, and they were saying that I'm like, that I'm not Googleable. Like if you like look me up, like that you can't learn about me on Google. And I was like, oh, that's so interesting. And I feel like that's like a thing that I actually like should try to look into or care about.
SPEAKER_02Well, let me tell you something. I said no. I go, he's a TikTok guy. Okay. And it said, I yes. Matt Peterson at Matt Peterson, the food challenge TikTok guy. He has around 6.5 million TikTok followers and built his audience around trying unusual foods, food challenges, and reactions. He previously worked as a food journalist. Oh. Is that true? I interned at a place called Food Beast, so I guess. Yeah, sure. Wow, it's a good idea. That changes the interview completely. I'd make this fun, personality driven, behind the scenes, not a nutrition interview.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I mean, honestly, we could go nutrition.
SPEAKER_02But anyway, I just thought that I'd go with that. What did what did it tell me to ask? How did how the hell? This is exact words from Chechb. How the hell did eating weird food become a career? Is what it says. Great question. Great question.
SPEAKER_00How in the hell? Really?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Answer that then. No. I was just yeah. Wait, how the how the hell did it become a career? Yeah. Just by the luck of a of uh social media because it is so true. We already told us, I guess, that story. Yeah. Yeah. Wait, what was the single nastiest thing you've ever eaten?
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's a good question.
SPEAKER_01That is a really good question. I used to eat really weird things when I was in LA. Like I was, especially with the food challenges, like, especially spice. Do you guys like spicy things? Like, I hate spice. I do, I like spices. Really? We should do a video like us doing like hot ones. Oh, yeah. Because I just in uh just in London, I filmed at this place. I started crying in front of the chef. Because it was spicy. So spicy. And she was like looking at me like, you're a freak. This isn't even spicy. And I had tears dripping down my face. Well, when you go get Thai food and you pick the spicy level, that's it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the wild wing thing, the what's that ghost pepper?
SPEAKER_02Oh, that was the other day.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but I had a kid that cried at during a baseball dinner.
SPEAKER_02So you started crying. Crying. It was so embarrassing. You haven't posted that video yet?
SPEAKER_01No. Or maybe I could- No, I yeah, I should post it. But I think I just cropped it out. I actually was from the video I just posted, but I didn't put me crying in. Oh, because you were legitimately crying. Yeah, totally crying. I was like, like, I was I was like, this is not it. I was I had tears dripping down my.
SPEAKER_02So you don't show yourself when you're having a horrible.
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah, I'm gonna be like, yeah, go to this restaurant, and that makes you cry. You'll leave you'll leave seasoning. So was the chef mortified? I think she was more like judging me, like you're embarrassing that you're crying this much. It was like a Caribbean style food. So I don't know. Like, I think maybe they're spice civil. I'm just aware. How'd you get the burn out of your mouth? Did you drink milk? Did you they had plantains there and it was making it worse? I love plantains. Oh, I love plantains too. So the nastiest thing you've ever eaten is I'm gonna go with that. Spicy spicy, nasty sauce. It was bad. What's next for you? What are your next trips? Where do you have? Oh, um this weekend I'm going to Nebraska to see my 99-year-old grandma, and I cannot wait. That's fantastic. And I just want to be like present and enjoy my time with her. Like why why are you here? Did you take I'm taking two weeks off to chill out? So um, no, in all honesty, I was supposed to come here because I was you would love this. Well, actually, like I feel like this is I feel like I'm channeling my inner John Jay by admitting this on a podcast. I was coming here to get a colonoscopy
Lynch Syndrome And Health Logistics
SPEAKER_01because I have this like Lynch syndrome in my family where like colon cancer runs in my family. So every two years I have to get a colonoscopy. So I had a scheduled colonoscopy, but then this is the thing that no one talks about as an influencer on my health insurance. I like do on my own, and I have my health insurance in New York, so it like wouldn't pay for my out-of-pocket or was trying to get me to pay out of pocket here, so I had to cancel it. So now I'm just here to enjoy being time with my nephew. I was spending time with my nephew, and I don't have to get a colonoscopy anymore. But hold on a second.
SPEAKER_02But you you need the colonoscopy.
SPEAKER_01I do still need a colonoscopy, so now I have to get it in New York, and I'm gonna get it in February.
SPEAKER_02Okay, because you know what I did, and and I just interviewed this guy yesterday, as a matter of fact. Um, Simon Med, Simon Med.com. And I can set you up with this. Please. Uh full body MRI. I want to do one of these. It's incredible.
SPEAKER_01Do they look into colon cancer though? They look into everything, they go head to toe, man. They find everything. Okay, because I want to do something like that because I just got flown to Sweden to do this thing that you would also eat up called Nico Health. Okay. You like walk in and it gives you this like full body, like it checks everything, but it doesn't look at colon cancer and it doesn't do like the MRI stuff. So, but I love things like that. It looked at my blood work and this and that. Like, you already did the Sweden thing? I did the Sweden thing, but it really was checking like blood work levels and like if you have diabetes and things like that. Did you post that already? I haven't posted that video, but I should show you because you would eat it up. But so when you said agreed to do, was that a brand deal through the agent? No, that was a they just reached out and I was like, I'll take a free trip to Sweden. So they sent you to Sweden and you were there for how long? Uh for four days. And then how long are you in the clinic? Are you um like it was just one afternoon? Just one afternoon? Yeah, it was epic.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was epic. How do you know that the brand deal's legit? That was a legit brand because it's the founder of Spotify. So I also like it. Oh, he owns that? Yeah, he owns. Yeah. Could you have stayed there longer and done other things? Yeah, I should have extended. I wanted to. But there were other things that it's called Nico Spa? Yeah, Nico, Nico Health. Wow. And they're coming to New York. So they brought a bunch of New York creators to Sweden to their headquarters to like promote that it's coming to New York. How long are you in town for? Oh, you're on yeah. Well, I leave on Friday. Oh, gosh, I could get you the full body MRI. Oh my god, I would do it.
SPEAKER_00What about that that lady that has the T's and the thing, the butt thing?
SPEAKER_02Oh, the butt thing. No, that's a cold, that's a colonic. Oh, yeah. The colonics are different than colonoscopies. Colon cleanse. Um, I'm also wait, wait, wait. I'm also, you know, that box I have at home is that thing I have at home is color guard.
SPEAKER_01That's for your colon clean.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, color guard, though, but that's the thing you poop in a box.
SPEAKER_01Right. But you yeah, but I need like the more intense. Did you have a what? What do you say, Lynch? It's called like Lynch syndrome.
SPEAKER_00It cleans it cleans it out. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Lynch is like colon in skin cancer, I'm like very prone to. So two of my cousins at like the age of 20 both had colon cancer. Uh, my grandpa, like everyone. So it's like it's a huge blessing because I wouldn't be getting colonoscopies at such a I've been getting them since I've been like 18. And then if you like, if they find polyps, they remove them. So it's kind of like they ever? Yeah, I actually have never had a polyp, but my sister did.
SPEAKER_02But for you, so so far you've had clean colonoscopies the whole time. Yeah. Yeah. Oh. Man. And see the thing about the assignment med thing I was telling you about too, that I can get you in is that um you don't need a this is new. You don't need a doctor prescription. You just go. Now insurance doesn't pay for it. Yeah. And it's very affordable, quite frankly. But I I would I was just with them yesterday. Wait, I'd be so game. It's it's you go in this machine, like well, you go to an MRI. And it just goes, Oh, when we were done here, I'll reach out to them and see if uh Friday.
SPEAKER_01I think you and I could do a whole series trying like weird health things.
SPEAKER_02Wait, you know what would be funny to do you do my stuff, I do your stuff. Yes.
Job Swap Series Brainstorm
SPEAKER_02You should fill in for me on the radio stations. I would love.
SPEAKER_01And I'll um wait, fuck. I already forgot. What is it? What? Me if I was driving there in the morning and what I would have to be replaced. Larry went to Applebee's. Yeah, Larry went to Applebee's. Larry went to Applebee's. Me, me filming myself walking in. Larry went to Applebee's. Yeah, call me. I will I'll fill in any day.
SPEAKER_02If you said Larry went to Applebee's in front of anybody else in the world, they would not understand. Nobody, nobody. This is the only time I ever, I think the only time I ever talk about it. I love Larry with the Applebee's.
SPEAKER_01I would love. Yeah. Yeah, one day we'll do a roll reverse. I'll get up at 3 30 a.m. 3. Oh my god. 3 a.m.
SPEAKER_00You come over and that's gonna be your next segment, then you're gonna be taking it. Do what I do for a day. Do what I do for a living.
SPEAKER_02You two would a morning show people do around the country.
SPEAKER_00Or do neither or do what I do for a living, and he has to collect be a garbage collector and no, that's a good idea. And he has to do a you know a like late job, or you have to work in Starbucks, or you have to you have to do all the jobs that every work take over your job for a day?
SPEAKER_02That's how you do it, right? And then you do their job.
SPEAKER_01Like, I'm tired of I want a real job.
SPEAKER_02I want to need a clock in.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_02From everything from trying to do a stand-up comedy to work in the Starbucks, we're gonna drive through McDonald's, and you could probably get brand deals all the way. I kind of am obsessed with this series. Being an actor, being an extra for a day, and then you're in a movie. Oh, I'm obsessed, and you're an extra, right?
SPEAKER_00And then do the the blue collar stuff.
SPEAKER_02Host a podcast.
SPEAKER_00Could you see yourself driving down an alleyway with a trash thing trying to get the things go?
SPEAKER_02I would probably have a mental breakdown, but I would.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you could be a cop for a day. You could get some of the things.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god, this could go crazy. You get a brand deal with waste management, you can get all kinds of ways.
SPEAKER_01All kinds of stuff. See, you know that you could be getting brand deals. So by the time I see you again, I need you to get a brand deal.
SPEAKER_02I don't have people to make that call to get waste. Yes, you do. I don't want to do it.
SPEAKER_01Ready?
unknownWhat?
SPEAKER_01This is I want you. I'm gonna take your mantras and you're gonna take what I'm gonna say. I'm looking you dead in the eyes. Stop saying you don't have people, like you are the person. You make it happen. Yeah, but I'm trying to do it. You don't need anyone else. Oh, okay. You're too lazy to make that call.
SPEAKER_02I work 24-7 on our well, I work that's fair. I work 21-7 on a radio show and then the other three hours on this podcast.
SPEAKER_01Well, why don't you loop me in then and I'll all do your the laziness?
SPEAKER_02All right.
SPEAKER_00I like the brainstorming, it's so funny.
SPEAKER_02But it'd be funny to see what Matt does from this podcast. Any of the ideas. Absolutely. Yeah, I'm gonna do it.
SPEAKER_01I'm I like I like the job thing. That's fine.
SPEAKER_00I can't wait. I think it'd be so fun.
SPEAKER_01Please.
SPEAKER_00Maybe you could be an NBA player for a day, or you could be one of the Harlem Globe Trotters, like he did for the day.
SPEAKER_01Uh Phoenix Sun's gorilla.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01I would love that. Have you seriously not thought about that? No, I'm kind of obsessed with that.
SPEAKER_00You could be a wildcat. I would be a good one. It could be Wilbur, the wildcat.
SPEAKER_01And then I could have like people start commenting, like, come try my job, and that's what I'm saying. That would happen.
SPEAKER_00That's exactly what would happen.
SPEAKER_01If you guys were doing that. And then, but then you can't.
SPEAKER_02But if you were a nurse, but you could also like fill in for Jennifer Hudson. Yes. That's how you get me, fill in for Kelly Repa for a day, and then you get more eyes on you. And then Okay, wait, we're doing this. Well, you gotta do it. And your UTA could probably make it happen.
SPEAKER_00What if you work like a Dunkin' Donuts?
SPEAKER_02Right, but she probably represents people that can help get stuff done behind the scenes.
SPEAKER_01I really love this.
SPEAKER_00Maybe you could be a jockey.
SPEAKER_01I love this. Maybe I could be like, I'm afraid that I won't be able to be a content creator forever, so I need to find out what my job is gonna be when I start doing this.
SPEAKER_02Be a soul cycle instructor for a day?
SPEAKER_01That I can already do. I took your class one time here. Do you remember? Oh my god, yeah, at the Madison.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I was like, I was really nervous. You're insane, man. I was so nervous. But anyway,

SPEAKER_00I see her once in a while running.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. She loves you guys.
SPEAKER_00In fact, I'm not sure if one day when she was running, if I remember that, I might remember this wrong, or maybe I did. Um, what's his face? The SEAL, the Navy SEAL was running.

SPEAKER_02My ego for a second is like, let's just, because I think you've given us some great stuff, probably uh several viral moments from this podcast. Yeah, I want to do it. I'm wearing a hat and my face is red.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_02It's like if anything that you post or share with us or whatever goes viral and be like, they're gonna be like, who's the guy, stupid guy in the white hat in the red face? No, you look amazing.
SPEAKER_00The whole time were you like, oh my god, I had a hat on.
SPEAKER_02No, not until just now, but now my head hurts.
SPEAKER_00Because you know, like when you wear something, like you wear a scarf or you put a necklace on the first time, you're like, oh my god, I have a necklace on.
